耶稣登上一座山，门徒和众人都随他上山，听他传道。耶稣对门徒说：“你们是世上的盐，盐若失去了味，怎能叫它再咸呢？以后无用，不过丢在外面，被人践踏了。”耶稣的这一番话，是鼓励门徒要充分发挥他们的骨干作用，用心www.58yuanyou.com传教，否则，就象失去咸味的盐，再也不能发挥作用了。

在西方，古时候，盐非常难得，“物以稀为贵”，盐就显得特别珍贵，用盐款待朋友被看成是最高的礼遇，吃了某人的盐（eat sb's salt）意味着“在某人处做客；受到某人款待”。同客人一块用餐时，盐罐放在餐桌中间，客人坐在盐罐上首（above the salt），离主人近，视为贵宾；因此 above the salt 指在上席，尊为上宾；普通客人往往坐在盐罐的下首（below the salt），离主人远，是末座，因而 below the salt 指居下席，屈为末座。

由此可见，为什么耶稣把他的门徒喻作“盐”，“世上的盐”（salt of the earth），其中 earth 指人类，表示象往食品中加盐一样， salt 人类社会的精华赋予人类生活最伟大的价值，因而 salt of the earth指“社会精华，最优秀的人，最高尚的人。”

可以托六尺之孤，可以寄百里之命，临大节而不可夺也。
