On August 3, 1492, three ships //www.58yuanyou.comsailed from Spain. The swww.58yuanyou.comhips sailed for a long, long time. Once they saw a lot of seaweed and were afraid they'd get tangled in it. Another time a monstrous9storm damaged the ships. On and on they sailed, never finding land. The sailors began to complain.
Columbus said. "If we don’t find land soon, we'll turn back.”
The men grumbled10, but agreed.
A few days later, the men heard a soft, flapping11noise above them.
“Birds!” shouted a happy sailor. “lt' s birds!” They knew that where there were birds, there was land. The men wondered what kind of place they were coming to.
Then one evening they saw a small island rising up out of the water.
The next morning Christopher //www.58yuanyou.comand some of his men got into a small boat and rowed toward shore. They saw only pristine12white sand and blue sky. Then some people came out from the bushes.
These must be Indians13, said Christopher. He thought he'd landed in the Indies. However, they were really on San Salvador14, an island off the coast of America.
The Indians were friendly and gave Christopher many fascinating15gifts. Christopher decided to take the gifts back to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.
The voyage back was stormy, but at last they arrived home with theircargo16.
With Queen Isabella’s assistance17,Christopher sailed back three more times.
But he never knew what a truly great discovery he'd made. Only later did the Europeans realize that Christopher Columbus had not found the Indies, but two huge continents North and South America.
Of course, not everyone has to be curious. But if you are, you may find out some wonderful things - things that may change the world.
