Once upon a time, there was a compassionate old monk. He was much loved by his disciples who always competed for his attention and affection. But the old monk was wise. He never played favorites among them, and made sure he treated all equally.

As the years passed, the old monk suffered constant severe pain due arthritis, his legs hurting most of all.

To show their gratitudeand devotionto their teacher, the disciples would take turns to massage his legs everyday.

The senior disciple would massage his right leg, while the junior, the left.

有一位老和尚患了风湿病，两条腿酸痛不已，他的两个徒弟为了表达孝心，每天轮流来替师父按摩，大徒弟按摩右腿，小徒弟按摩左腿。

Both of them showed great mindfulness and care at their task.

And greatly relieved of his pain, the old monk was most thankful to both of them.

When the senior disciple massaged the Master’s right leg,www.58yuanyou.com the Master//www.58yuanyou.com would then use the opportunity to praise his junior Dharma brother in front of him.

“Did you know that your junior brother has such warm and gentle hands? My left leg is feeling so much better.”

Likewise, when the junior disciple massaged the Master's left leg, he would then praise his senior disciple in front of him.

“Did you know that your senior Dharma brother has such skillful hands? My right leg is almost pain-free.”

每次大徒弟来按摩右腿的时候，老和尚总会在他面前赞美小徒弟按摩有方，让他的左腿减少很多疼痛，大徒弟听了就不大开心；等到小徒弟来按摩左腿的时候，老和尚也在他面前夸赞大徒弟按摩很用心，让他的右腿日渐康复，小徒弟听了也不大高兴。

What the old monk had intendedto do was to encourage his two disciples to learn from each other.

But sadly, both disciples misunderstood their teacher’s good inten原由网tions, and each thought their master was favoring one over the other.

One day, while his senior brother was absent, the junior disciple then broke the old monk’s right leg while he was massaging the left.

“Now, Master will only need to rely on me since the other leg is now broken!”, thought the junior foolishly.

When the senior disciple returned and saw what had happened, he was furious.

“How dare you break Master’s right leg? I have worked so hard to relieve his pain.”

Wanting revengethe senior then broke his master’s left leg too.

老和尚原本是一番美意，希望师兄弟彼此勉励，相互学习。可是两个徒弟却误以为师父赞叹对方，就是不欢喜自己，因此妒火中烧。有一天，大徒弟来按摩的时候，趁着小师弟出门办事，心想：师弟，每次师父都说你按摩得怎么好、怎么好，哼！今天趁你不在，我就把你按摩的左腿打断，让你明天没有腿可以按摩。

第二天，师弟回来了，看见自己按摩的左腿被打断了，不禁怒火攻心，就想：一定是师兄故意跟我捣蛋，把我按摩的左腿打断了。好！我也要把你按摩的右腿打断，让你从今以后没有腿子可以按摩。

就因为师兄弟两人之间互相嫉妒，师父的损失可更大了，因为他没有腿了。

Words of Wisdom

From this story, it tells us that Jealousy is a double-edgedsword. When we use this sword to hurt others, we also hurt ourselves.

Both disciples were blinded by jealousy. And they had forgotten their original intention and purpose. Instead, they acted senselessly. And in the end, everyone involved suffered greatly. Many of us are just like the two disciples. Over small matters, we would treat each other without kindness, respect or tolerance.

世间上很多的人事，就是因为大家互不相容、互不尊重，你不希望我好、我不希望你好，为了争一口闲气，以致兄弟阋墙、亲人反目、朋友仇视。中华民族的民族性有很多优点，但是不希望人家好，则是一个丑陋的恶习。要知道， 我们想要今天的社会更好、家庭更好、人我之间更好，一定要欢喜你好、欢喜他好、欢喜大家好啊！

According to the Dharma Words by Venerable Master Hsing Yun,

Anger and hatred are the root of trouble.

Gratitude and contentment are

the source of happiness.

瞋怒怨恨，是烦恼的根本。

感恩知足，是快乐的泉源。

A moment of loving-kindness can make all things good;

A moment of anger can turn all situations evil.

一念之慈，万物皆善；

一心之瞋，千般为恶。

So let us endeavorto:

Practice to speak a mouthful of good words.

To do a handful of good deeds.

To show a face full ofYrWUGEOcOw smiles.

And have a heart full of joy.

满口的好话，满手的好事，

满面的微笑，满心的欢喜。

By conqueringjealousy, we will be the master of ourselves, and be the greatest of friends to others.
