Companies need to identify and work towards a purpose which reaches beyond shortterm shareholder value. The relevance of this WHY question has become wide原由网ly accepted in the past years. Research shows that, for companies, purpose is key to exceptional performance, contributing at the same time to employee satisfaction. This goes hand in hand with people’s need to find a purpose and a meaning in what they do; they aim to integrate their whole selves into their work.

What does “purpose” mean for the individual?

“Purpose” is the answer to your individual WHY. It is about your passions, your strengths, your deepest motivations and your uniqueness. It is about your identity, the essence of who you are. EHS/HSE professionals have a strong sense of their own individual purposes,which possibly set them apart from many other people.

In some cases, this purpose may appear a bit intellectual. Tjeerd Hendel-Blackford is driven by a desire to see companies act responsibly with regard to the natural environment, as well as the safety and health of those that come into contact with those companies. “I am a firm believer that the EHS function, if given the appropriate status and resources within a company,is a fundamental contributor to the long-term success,profitability,

and sustainability of any business.”

At times, purpose may take on a rather physical appearance. Check out the video of Mustafa Tarek - Taio Torq , EHS lead at Scaffolding of Great Britain (SGB). What you will pick up at once, without any knowledge of Arabic and without subtitles, is that this guy is imbued with what he calls a „brothers-keepers culture“. In Mustafa’s words: „I am a site guy – always

have been, you find me climbing scaffolds, observing craines andfollowing permits.It s my passion.

I feel a deep responsibility towards making others safe”.

The particular focus of his caring is on the workforce from the local urban areas. Mustafa continues: “How to brake safe behavior down to people who never saw a training camp before, and who can’t read?” His approach includes accelerated learning techniques, which means he goes through all tasks with them before they are put on site to carry them out, and makes sure they acquire the appropriate know how. Mustafa’s credo is, “talk, ask, and be accretive before you take the move”. His purpose is crystal clear: “I want to make the most aggressive work environment more suitable and less dangerous”.

Eishah,health professional with Siemens Qatar lives up to her purpose in more of a subdued, still impactful way. She says, "My career has always been in the medical health field. Being able to change and make a difference in the lives of others always being my passion. And it’s so rewarding for me to be able to see the health of others improving. Good health and nutrition nourishes our bodies and minds. Without it we can’t function properly".

For some, purpose may develop quite naturally early on in their lives. Dr. Katrin Melzer Siemens expert for product-related environmental

protection, is a case in point: “My heart has always been beating for the environment –ourplanet is so amazinglybeautiful that, for me,there was

no other way than investing all my job-related energy in environmental protection”.

Workplace safety speaker Louise Taggart: "My younger brother died in an entirely preventable workplace incident and I'm driven by the need to prevent any other family from having to go through what my family already has gone through, and what we'll forever continue to go through. Health and safety is not all about rules and regulations, at the heart of it is people, loved ones who should be cared for and who should get home safe and sound at the gtFnGqpqfend of each and every working day".

the motivation and perseverance to advocate your convictions, and it can generate enormous impact. However, translation into action is required. “Serving the world to make it a better place” is a strong statement. What all is necessary to implement this goal?

Tjeerd,Mustafa,Eisha,Katrin,Louise,their personal purposes may be quitedifferent from each other. But they have three key ingredients in common:

Communication, relationships, connecting: more and more future leaders select employers according to these potentials. For example Will Weatherford, Director Environment Health Safety at FieldCore. During his 25+ year career he opted only for companies which offer the formulation of meaning and the improvement of the lives of their employees.

On this basis, we then need to translate EHS topics into the language of business, the language of participants in training courses, or customers and to demonstrate the contribution EHS makes to achieving set goals. For Will, transporting EHS performance into business results is key. This means building bridges. Will: “I am always driven to understand differences: local attitudes, beliefs, preconceived notions of an EHS partner, breaking down barriers and contributing to better solutions and services”. His key message:
