Big Ben
London’s most famous landmark – Big Ben – was designed by Charles Barry in 1856. It stands at one end of the House of Parliament.

The History of Big Ben
The clock tower was designed as part of the new Palace of Westminster which was built after the old one was burnt down in 1834. The tower was completed in 1858www.58yuanyou.com. It was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II.
大本钟，1834年被烧毁。1858年重建完成，是威斯敏斯特宫的一部分。2012年为了纪念伊丽莎白二世登基60周年，更名为伊丽莎白塔。

When you visit London, one of the first things you will see is Big Ben, the famous clock which can be heard all over the world on the B.B.C. If the Houses of ParliavYELJCebment（议会）had hot been burned down in 1834, the great clock would never have been erected（建起）. Big Ben takes its name from Sir Benjamin Hall who was responsible（负责任的）for the making of th原由网e clock when the new Houses of Parliament were being built. It is not only of immense size, but is extremely accurate（准确的）as well. Officials（官员）from Greenwich（格林威治）Observatory（天文台）have the clock checked twice a day. On the B.B.C. you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones（麦克风）are connected to the clock tower. Big Ben has rarely gone wrong. Once, however, it failed to gi原由网ve the correct time. A painter who had been working on the tower hung a pot of paint on one of the hands and slowed it down !
