“熟词偏义”是英语中常见的情况，看似每个单词都认识，连在一起就不知道是什么意思。比如下面的表达：
1、wear the trousers
wear the trousers英 [we(r) trazz] 美 [wer trazrz]
这个词在英文翻译中指的是：
exercise authority or be in charge，就是行使职权或负责的意思;当家，掌权，表示一个人在婚姻等关系中处于支配的位置，起指挥的作用。直白点就是我们中国人说的一家之主,不过这个词多用来形容女性。

这个词的意思是：

一直由我支付账单，维持家庭生计。

社会地位很大程度上是由家里经济支柱的职业决定的。
