冬至，顾名思义是“冬天到来”的意思。这是中国农历中一个非常重要的节气，也是中华民族的一个传统节日。
在中国北方，有一个像这样的传统说法：“冬至饺子夏至面”。遵循这样的习俗，不同地区的人们在冬至这一天都会吃饺子。

文中的Winter Solstice就是“冬至”的意思，是二十四节气（原由网solar term）之一，在每年公历12月21日至23日之间，冬至过后，夜空星象完全换成冬季星空（starry sky），而且从这一天开始“进九”。而此时南半球正值酷热的盛夏（midsummer）。相关词汇还有：立冬（Winter begins），大雪（Heavy snow），小寒（Slight cold）等。
